Spring break
Before spring break, I had the session at JPS where I looked at Archive Zines. I have never heard about ZINE. It was interesting to know what it is about and why it attracts people. ZINE is short for magazine or fanzine, and zines are self-publications. At the same time, It can be motivated by a desire for self-expression but also not for profit. I love to express myself physically and visually. When I want to express my feelings, I sometimes feel hard to put them into words. Therefore, I would like to show my massage and the concept through the ZINE.
When I saw other students’ ZINE, they all had attractive points and unique ideas. Especially the ideas for the layout and the type of paper they have used. ZINE is an independent booklet, some of the students created it by physically cutting and glueing text and images onto a master flat for photocopying, but others produced the master by typing and formatting pages on a computer. I like how each ZINE is created in each people’s style, and there is only one of these in the world. I thought Zines were in no way mainstream. Therefore, there are many ways to create a zine, and there are no written rules. I could go wild with my content and images as zines have more of a DIY inspired look. In addition, I felt when it comes to publishing zines, and many parts are a lot different than publishing magazines. It is because of that zines are not mainstream, as I said. While publishing companies often produce magazines, zines are self-published for a small circulation, distributed through mail order and word of mouth. Magazines may focus on selling advertising space and making a profit, whilst zines are mainly created to spread bold, solid and revolutionary ideas. I am not sure what is my concept for my ZINE, but I’m sure that I can create that ZINE that filled with my style and have a strong story behind it.
